Tips On Becoming a Counselor

Category : Career Articles

Once you decide to expand your education by earning a degree, it is pertinent that you know ahead of time which career field you want to enter into. Although the first year or two of studies will be directed toward general education, you want to make sure you are taking the courses that are actually going to contribute toward your field of work. If you have decided you would like to become a counselor, it is first imperative that you decide which kind. For now, let’s take a quick look at the top three most popular careers for counselors.

Mental Health Counselor

As a mental health counselor, you will spend your time performing clinical assessments on patients as well as developing customised treatment plans. You will need a master’s degree to become a mental health counselor, but once you graduate, you can either open up your own practice or work in an already-established medical center.

Substance Abuse Counselor

A substance abuse counselor spends his or her time working with clients who have issues with substance abuse. It is not uncommon for patients to come to a substance abuse counselor and ask for guidance on the correct way to overcome the addiction. The counselor will then create a customised treatment plan, typically one that includes going to an inpatient or outpatient addiction treatment program.

Domestic Abuse Counselor

Domestic abuse counselors focus on patients who have either been the victim or perpetrator of domestic abuse. In some rare instances, the patient will be both the victim and perpetrator. Depending on the level of degree the counselor has obtained, he or he may be able to prescribe medications.

The Takeaway

Becoming a counselor is a very rewarding career because you can see for yourself how you are helping people overcome some of their biggest struggles. If you would like to become a counselor, please carefully consider which field of work you see yourself enjoying the most.
