What You Need to Know About Workplace Maternity Rights

Having a baby is one of the most joyous times in life. Being able to actually slow down and enjoy this life event is crucial to your baby's development and also to the mother's emotional well being. Here is what you need to know about maternity rights in the workplace.

The UK Appreciates Mums

The United Kingdom has put laws in place that put mums first. Currently expectant mothers working in the UK are entitled to 26 weeks of Ordinary Maternity Leave along with 26 weeks of Additional Maternity leave. This means that you can legally take a full year off with your new baby without fear of losing your job. Your job is protected by this law during this time.

Will I get Paid?

Currently the law insists that you get 90% of your average earnings for up to 39 weeks during your maternity leave. This gives mothers a wonderful opportunity to relax and get adjusted to their new babies. Many mothers find that after this break, they come back to the workplace rejuvenated. The result is that in the long run they are better employees for it.

Special Rules

There are some special stipulations concerning maternity leave. You can begin your maternity leave as early as 11 weeks before the baby's due date. However, if you miss work due to a pregnancy related illness in the 4 weeks before the baby is due, then this will start a forced start day of maternity leave. You are not required to take the full 52 weeks off, but you are required to take 2 weeks off and 4 if you work a factory job.

The UK has made great provision for new mums to bond with their babies and enjoy this wonderful time in life. Make sure you discuss with your particular employer the ins and outs of your upcoming maternity leave.
