A Bachelor's Degree
You will need to have at least a bachelor's degree if you want to become a human services worker. It's best to have your degree in the area of social work. A bachelor's degree can get your foot in the door with a job, but a master's degree will be even better for your success.
You don't need licensing for all positions. However, you will need special licensing if you want to become a substance abuse counselor. You will have to take a test if you want to obtain that license as well.
Experience is generally not required to become a human services worker if you have the education and credentials. However, it's a good idea to get some experience under your belt before going for a job. You can always ask to volunteer for a company or organization that offers the opportunity. You could do some work inside a residential home for seniors, a domestic violence facility, or a rehabilitation center. The idea is to familiarize yourself with the procedures in those facilities.
